Bethlehem, PA \u2013<\/strong> Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that Bethlehem Catholic High School student, John Zemanek, has been accepted to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. Rep. Cartwright proudly nominated John to attend the academy where he will begin his service career.<\/p>\n

John is a graduate of Bethlehem Catholic High School and the son of Kenneth and Elizabeth Zemanek. While attending Bethlehem Catholic High, John was a member of the marching band, a jazz band trumpet section leader, a Hawk Ambassador, and a member of the cross country and track & field teams. He is also an Eagle Scout and a volunteer for the Neighborhood Association.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is my privilege and honor to nominate our best and brightest students to our nation\u2019s distinguished institutions of military service and higher learning,\u201d said Rep. Cartwright.<\/strong> \u201cTheir service to our country will be a source of pride for our communities and a character-shaping experience for these future military officers. John will surely become a successful leader representing our country with integrity. I congratulate John on his acceptance into the academy and wish him the very best.\u201d<\/p>\n

In order to attend one of the military academies, students must receive a nomination from their Member of Congress. Students may apply to the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy.\u00a0 Accepted students will receive a full scholarship, and upon graduation, they must complete the military service obligation requirement for each school.<\/p>\n

Rep. Cartwright added<\/strong>, \u201cThroughout our nation\u2019s history, U.S. Service Academies have played an important role in preparing young people for service to our country.\u00a0 As a Pennsylvanian, I am proud of our patriotic young men and women who are willing to step forward and answer the call of duty.\u00a0 It is an honor to play a role in preparing our next generation of leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Matt Cartwright represents Pennsylvania\u2019s 17th Congressional District, which includes Schuylkill County and portions of Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, and Northampton Counties.\u00a0 Cartwright serves on the House Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.<\/em><\/p>\n
