{"id":51439,"date":"2017-11-06T21:17:20","date_gmt":"2017-11-07T02:17:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=51439"},"modified":"2018-04-26T22:21:07","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T02:21:07","slug":"allentown-police-embark-community-engagement-365","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=51439","title":{"rendered":"ALLENTOWN POLICE EMBARK ON COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT 365"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The Allentown police department is stepping-up its outreach in the community and giving those who they reach something to remember them by.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Mayor Ed Pawlowski and Police Chief Glen Dorney announced the kick-off of the Community Engagement 365 program this morning during a news conference in City Council Chambers.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The goal of the program is to have officers meet members of the community daily, on a non-call response instance, to simply meet and form a respectful relationship.\u00a0 That encounter would be marked with a keepsake item or age relevant item bearing the insignia of the department and a slogan such as \u201cWorking Together to Build a Better Allentown.\u201d<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Dorney said, \u201cBy engaging our community during encounters such as this, we can work together to establish bonds in our neighborhoods to build trust and mutual respect.\u00a0 Through these relationships, we can help reduce crime and increase neighborhood safety.\u00a0 The keepsake item will be a token of that relationship and a daily reminder of the commitment of the department toward building positive, mutually respectful relationships with our community.\u201d<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u201cThe department has been encouraging officers to get out of their cars when possible and establish relationships with residents of the neighborhoods,\u201d said Pawlowski.\u00a0 \u201cCommunity Engagement 365 puts an emphasis on that effort and an adult looking at that keepsake item or a child with a football or other sports item hopefully will look on the members of the department as new friends and allies.\u201d <u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Upside Allentown has provided $500 to get the program started with another $2,000 from the city budget for this year. \u00a0Upside Allentown is providing $3,000 for the program in 2018.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Dorney says the program can have far-reaching impact.\u00a0 \u201cIf each officer working has a mutually respectful encounter with one member of the community each day, we can form thousands of these relationships each year.\u201d<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">A bearded Dorney also took the opportunity to announce the start of the department\u2019s \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">No-Shave November\u201d program.\u00a0 <u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u201cNo Shave November\u201d allows officers to forgo the policy on shaving for a $20 donation per month (November and December only).
