{"id":53305,"date":"2017-11-20T17:47:02","date_gmt":"2017-11-20T22:47:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=53305"},"modified":"2018-04-26T22:21:07","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T02:21:07","slug":"allentown-receiving-cops-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=53305","title":{"rendered":"Allentown Receiving COPS Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 22.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">FEDS TO FUND SIX NEW POLICE OFFICERS<\/span> <\/b><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The City of Allentown will be getting six additional police officers thanks to funding from the U.S Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The Office announced today that Allentown will receive $750,000 over three years requiring a local match of about $1.1 million.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Mayor Ed Pawlowski said, \u201cThis is tremendous news.\u00a0 We have been increasing the size of the department ever since a wave of retirements in 2005-2006 had reduced the force to about 160 officers.\u00a0 This is a highly competitive process.\u00a0 More than 1,100 departments filed applications.\u00a0 I commend Chief Dorney and his staff for putting together the successful application.\u201d<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">There are currently 212 sworn officers on the department.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">2017 COPS Hiring Program grant awards cover 802 officers from 179 departments across the country totaling $98.5 million.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Allentown is one of just four departments across Pennsylvania to receive funding, joining the Coatesville, Shamokin and Southern Chester County Regional police departments that each were awarded one officer.\u00a0 Applications were submitted from 41 departments across the state.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4468087546510119144Default\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">According to an Office fact sheet, \u201cTwenty-three<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: windowtext;\"> years after the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 was signed into law, the COPS Office continues to support the efforts of law enforcement agencies across the country as they develop creative and innovative ways to deal with long-standing community crime problems and public safety issues. To date, the COPS Office has invested more than $14 billion, including grants to more than 13,000 state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies, to reduce crime by advancing community policing. In all, COPS Office funding has supported the hiring of more than 130,000 law enforcement officers in agencies large and small across the nation.\u201d<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: windowtext;\"><u><\/u>\u00a0<u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u201cCHP is the COPS Office&#8217;s flagship program with a long history of promoting police-community partnerships for the express purpose of crime reduction through effective community policing.
