{"id":5518,"date":"2015-05-18T15:09:18","date_gmt":"2015-05-18T19:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=5518"},"modified":"2015-05-18T15:37:54","modified_gmt":"2015-05-18T19:37:54","slug":"wdiy-members-trigger-book-donations-to-lehigh-valley-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=5518","title":{"rendered":"WDIY Members Trigger Book Donations to Lehigh Valley Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHOTO: Cops \u2018n\u2019 Kids Lehigh Valley President, Beverly Bradley, and WDIY Executive Director, Wagner Previato, at a Cops \u2018n\u2019 Kids event at Northampton Community College\u2019s <em>Fowler<\/em> Family Southside <em>Center<\/em> in April, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>(Lehigh Valley, PA)<\/strong> WDIY 88.1 FM, the Lehigh Valley\u2019s community NPR station, announced today that 1,428 books will be provided to children in the Lehigh Valley through the Cops \u2018n\u2019 Kids Children\u2019s Literacy Program as a result of the station\u2019s recent spring membership drive.<\/p>\n<p>WDIY partnered with Easton-based Weyerbacher Brewing Company who provided the resources needed for the Lehigh Valley chapter of Cops \u2018n\u2019 Kids to deliver three books to area children for every $100 the station raised during its membership drive.<\/p>\n<p>Cops \u2018n\u2019 Kids Lehigh Valley President, Beverly Bradley, praised the three-way partnership as a victory for the Lehigh Valley\u2019s youngest residents. \u201cAs an educator, I particularly love thinking that over 1,400 free books will be in the hands of children because of WDIY\u2019s members. Encouraging reading at a young age can change the future of a child and our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen different organizations in the community come together, they can make a real positive impact,\u201d said Dan Weirback, president and CEO of Weyerbacher Brewing Company. \u201cWeyerbacher is proud to support WDIY and children\u2019s literacy in the Lehigh Valley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel very humbled that through the support of WDIY members and the Weyerbacher Brewing Company, we were able to provide so many books to children in the Lehigh Valley,\u201d said Wagner Previato, WDIY Executive Director. \u201cOur partnership with Weyerbacher allowed all donations made to WDIY during our spring drive to trigger a second donation to Cops \u2018n\u2019 Kids Lehigh Valley. This \u2018double community benefit\u2019 from a single donation really struck a chord with WDIY supporters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cops \u2018n\u2019 Kids is a fast-growing, national reading initiative in which police officers positively connect with the communities they serve by delivering books to children in Grades pre-K-8. The non-profit organization promotes learning for children and families by providing meaningful literacy-based experiences while encouraging positive relationships between children, police, and the community.<\/p>\n<p>WDIY is the Lehigh Valley\u2019s community NPR station, providing the Lehigh Valley with NPR news, a wide diversity of music and locally-produced public affairs programs.
