Woman to Woman (A Convening) on March 24 on a Free Saturday<\/strong><\/p>\n

Allentown, PA \u2013 <\/strong>Vivian Maier, Shirley Chisholm and Wangari Maathi are three women you should know. They are among the amazing, fabulous, courageous and important women who will be honored during Women\u2019s History Month at the Allentown Art Museum.<\/p>\n

Come witness their contributions, their life accomplishments and their vision in a special documentary film series. During the month of March, the Museum celebrates the important roles women have played in the arts, culture and society.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marina Abramovi\u0107: The Artist Is Present<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

This feature-length documentary follows the artist as she prepares for what may be the most important moment of her life: a major retrospective of her work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. For Marina it is the chance to finally answer the question she has been hearing over and over again for four decades: \u201cBut why is this art?\u201d<\/p>\n

Finding Vivian Maier<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

This documentary follows the life of Vivian Maier, an American street photographer<\/p>\n

born in New York City, who spent most of her youth in France and returned to the U.S. to work as a nanny and care-giver for the rest of her life. She would ultimately leave more than 100,000<\/p>\n

negatives, homemade films, recordings and collections, assembling one of the most fascinating windows into American life in the second half of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n

Chisholm<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

In 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first black woman elected to Congress. In 1972, she was the first black woman to run for president. Shunned by the political establishment, she’s supported by a motley crew of blacks, feminists and young voters. In this documentary, see how their campaign-trail adventures are frenzied, fierce and fundamentally right on.<\/p>\n

Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathi<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

This documentary tells the story of Kenya\u2019s Green Belt Movement, a grassroots organization encouraging rural women and families to plant trees in community groups, and follows Wangari Maathai, the movement\u2019s founder and the first environmentalist and African woman to win the Nobel Prize.<\/p>\n

Third Thursday on March 15th features a fascinating conversation among nine award-winning photographers\u2014five visionary women, four visionary men–who will delve into their unique perspectives on the art of photography. The audience will take part in the discussion, which coincides with the Museum\u2019s exhibition Women of Vision: National Geographic Photographers on Assignment. <\/em>The 6:30pm dialogue is presented by Frame 37, a Lehigh Valley consortium of extraordinary accomplished photographers.<\/p>\n
