{"id":75889,"date":"2018-05-03T22:52:38","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T02:52:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=75889"},"modified":"2018-05-03T22:52:38","modified_gmt":"2018-05-04T02:52:38","slug":"lehigh-valley-charter-high-school-for-the-arts-to-hold-its-15th-annual-spring-concert-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=75889","title":{"rendered":"Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts to hold its 15th Annual Spring Concert Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Featured Image:\u00a0 David Macbeth, Charter Arts&#8217; Artistic Director of Vocal Music, leads the combined choirs in the 2017 Winter Concert. &#8211; Photo by\u00a0Kristen Wieder<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>BETHLEHEM, PA &#8212;The award-winning music department of the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts (Charter Arts), located at 321 East 3rd Street in Bethlehem, will hold its fifteenth-annual Spring Concert Series with its Spring Choral Concert on <span data-term=\"goog_1172047200\">May 7 &amp; 8<\/span>, its Spring Instrumental Concert taking on <span data-term=\"goog_1172047201\">Friday, May 11<\/span>, and its Big Band Concert on <span data-term=\"goog_1172047202\">May 15<\/span>.\u00a0 Concerts begin at <span data-term=\"goog_1172047203\">7pm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The choral\u00a0concert\u00a0will feature all of the school&#8217;s choirs, directed by David Macbeth, including the acclaimed Charter Arts Touring Choir.\u00a0 More than 140 students comprise these choirs.\u00a0 A feature of this year&#8217;s concert will include a performance of <em>&#8220;MASS&#8221; <\/em>by Swedish composer,\u00a0 Steve Dobrogosz.<\/p>\n<p>The instrumental\u00a0concert\u00a0will feature the Charter Arts Wind Ensemble , Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble and Orchestra. The Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensembles are led by Matthew Wells, the Guitar Ensemble is led by John Arnold, and the Orchestra is led by Kimberly Seifert. Featured works will\u00a0include:\u00a0 <em>Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Sa\u00ebns,\u00a0El Camino Real by Alfred Reed and Labyrinth by Kit Watkins arr. Mike Myers.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Charter Arts Big Band, led by Mike Lorenz, earned an &#8216;excellent&#8217; rating at this year&#8217;s SteelStacks High School Jazz Showcase,\u00a0as well as earning awards for best jazz vocal soloist and best rhythm section soloist.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $13 adult, $11 senior\/student, and can be purchased online at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.charterarts.org\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.charterarts.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1525483475041000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGBBHgYIeZryQ2uKMm1S8yYjt0fdg\">www.CharterArts.org<\/a>\u00a0or at the door if not sold out.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>ABOUT THE LEHIGH VALLEY CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS (CHARTER ARTS)\u00a0MUSIC\u00a0DEPARTMENT:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/u><br \/>\nThe Charter Arts\u00a0Music\u00a0Department\u00a0continues its legacy of excellence as it accrues many accolades and awards.\u00a0 The Charter Arts\u00a0Music\u00a0Department\u00a0was the recipient of the Board of Directors\u00a0Award\u00a0at the 2016 Lehigh Valley\u00a0Music\u00a0Awards, and the Charter Arts Jazz Band won best school youth band at the awards this year. The\u00a0department&#8217;s work also led Charter Arts to be named as one of only 119 schools in the nation to qualify as a 2016 Grammy Signature School Semi-Finalist.<\/p>\n<p>The Charter Arts Touring Choir earned a gold medal at the 2012 World Choir Games, which was the highest\u00a0award\u00a0for a high school choir at the prestigious international event.\u00a0 The choir will perform at Carnegie Hall with John Rutter this May and has performed to sold-out crowds in the region. In addition, the choir has graced the stage alongside such acts as the pop group,\u00a0<em>Paramore,\u00a0<\/em>the operatic quartet,<em>\u00a0The Tenors<\/em>, and the legendary rock group,\u00a0<em>Foreigner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the school&#8217;s various instrumental ensembles and individual performers earn many awards at competitions such as the PMEA choral, orchestra and band competitions; and are often invited to perform with many great artists&#8230;such as Julliard Jazz and Kamasi Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Students who major in instrumental or vocal\u00a0music\u00a0at Charter Arts, experience a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum, which includes a wide range of classical and jazz studies.\u00a0 The course catalog consists of more than sixty courses that focus on ensemble work, improvisation and individual technique.\u00a0 Students are required to complete courses in\u00a0music\u00a0history, four years of\u00a0music\u00a0theory, four years of technique classes and a variety of\u00a0music\u00a0electives that include: conducting, composition and arranging, or vocal techniques in such genres as opera, German Lied or Italian Song, to name a few.<br \/>\n<strong><u>ABOUT THE LEHIGH VALLEY CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nThe Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts (Charter Arts), opened in 2003, is an audition-based, tuition-free, public charter school that provides a comprehensive curriculum for high school students, grades 9-12, who have a passion for the arts.
