font-family: Cambria;\">There were only a few scattered seats left unoccupied Sunday night at<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2gbZvjd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> The Sands Event Center<\/a> <\/strong>as an eager crowd welcomed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonbrowne.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jackson Browne<\/strong><\/a> and opening act <a href=\"https:\/\/vondashepard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Vonda Shepard<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">The name Vonda Shepard should sound familiar.\u00a0 She was a back-up vocalist for Browne\u2019s band for years, and probably best known for the theme song to the television show,\u00a0 \u2018Ally McBeal\u2019, with \u201cSearching My Soul\u201d.\u00a0 The series ran for five years, and as series wound down, more of her music became woven into the show, which also produced a few cameo performances in one of the night clubs the characters would visit.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">She told the crowd that Jackson made a bet with her.\u00a0 If she released a new album, she could open for Browne\u2019s May dates.\u00a0 And lo and behold, she performed several songs on piano from her new release.\u00a0 Shepard\u2019s vocals covered a great range, with humor and banter thrown in her set.\u00a0 As expected, she closed with \u201cSearching My Soul\u201d and fully embraced the song\u2019s popularity.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">After a brief intermission, Jackson Browne took the stage, sat down at the piano, and opened with \u201cBefore the Deludge\u201d (Late For The Sky).\u00a0 The song took us back to 1974, and if one was to think this would be a chronological set, spanning Browne\u2019s 45-year (or so) career, we were mistaken.\u00a0 \u201cSome Bridges\u201d (Looking East) followed, as Jackson took center stage on guitar, then \u201cYou Love the Thunder\u201d (Running on Empty).<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">This was not just a night to celebrate the classic hits, as \u201cThe Dreamer\u201d was introduced as a new release.\u00a0 He explained the collaboration with Los Cenzontles, and the song provided a Spanish flair in the intro.\u00a0 The verses were sung in English, the choruses in Spanish.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">Browne added more diversity in sound with \u201cLives of the Balance\u201d, as the back up vocalists provided powerful R&amp;B and gospel harmonies.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The audience clapped along to \u201cDoctor My Eyes\u201d (Saturate Before Using), as Browne moved back on piano.\u00a0 Some fans rose to their feet to dance along and by the end, received a small standing ovation.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There\u2019s a lot to be said for performing the hits as they were originally recorded, and in Browne\u2019s case, the formula worked.\u00a0 Joined onstage with longtime band members, Val McCallum on guitar, Bob Glaub on bass, and Greg Leisz on the pedal steel player, this seventies southern California sound not only holds up well, but sounds better than ever.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">While there was a set list in place, it didn\u2019t stop many hard-core fans as they yelled their favorite requests.\u00a0 Other songs performed were:\u00a0 \u201cThese Days\u201d, \u201cShaky Town\u201d, \u201cNever Stop\u201d, and in \u201cI am a Patriot\/It\u2019s Your Thing\u201d, Browne received the first full standing ovation.\u00a0 \u201cSomebody\u2019s Baby\u201d received a slightly faster tempo, and Vonda Shepard joined in on \u201cWorld in Motion\u201d.\u00a0 Back on piano, Browne performed \u201cSky Blue and Black\u201d (I\u2019m Alive), and then effortlessly changed over to guitar for \u201cIn a Shape of a Heart\u201d (Lives in the Balance).<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">As the set wound down, fans were elated to hear \u201cThe Pretender\u201d, and the set closed with \u201cRunning on Empty\u201d with the audience on their feet as they danced and sang along.\u00a0 Browne returned with a two-song encore, \u201cTake it Easy\u201d, and \u201cOur Lady of the Well\u201d.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Cambria;\">Browne performed for close to two and a half hours with a twenty-song set.\u00a0 The songs held up to the test of time, while the lyrics still carry relevance.\u00a0 Browne\u2019s classic hits remain the same, providing comfort in challenging times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;
