Interview by Diane Fleischman<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n

Terry Fator is exactly where he wants to be.\u00a0 A talented and successful ventriloquist, \u00a0singer, comedian, and celebrity impressionist, \u00a0Fator currently performs four shows a week at The Mirage in Las Vegas.\u00a0 He escapes from the desert on weekends to perform other parts of the country, which includes an upcoming show at The Sands on Saturday, June 23rd<\/sup><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Recently, The Valley Ledger had the opportunity to speak with Fator to learn more about his early years and what the future holds.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the biggest misconceptions about this second season winner of \u2018America\u2019s Got Talent\u2019 (2007) is that he became an overnight sensation.\u00a0 He walked away from the show with a million dollar prize, and a year contract at The Hilton in Las Vegas. Later on, The Mirage offered Fator a deal too good to refuse, a five-year residency contract paying out $100 million. \u00a0Call it a twist of irony; Fator had actually worked over half of his life to get his career to this point.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally from Texas, Fator was around ten years old when he developed an interest in magic shows and ventriloquism. He saw ventriloquism as more original art form for himself, as he began practicing to throw his voice.\u00a0 \u201cI was influenced by Edgar Bergen with Charles McCarthy, Paul Winchell, Jimmy Nelson and Jay Johnson with his puppet, Bob.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI also watched every comedian who was around at that time, Carol Burnett, Jerry Lewis, and Tim Conway,\u201d he noted as favorites.<\/span><\/p>\n

Growing up with a brother and sister, music played a large influence in his life.\u00a0 \u201cWe were allowed to listen to anything and everything. But when we listened to too much of one musical style, my parents made us switch to something else.\u00a0 So it was a well rounded musical upbringing.\u201d By the late eighties, Fator was touring with \u2018Freedom Jam\u2019 as the lead singer, and then joined \u2018Texas the Band\u2019.\u00a0 And right around that time, Walter T. Ardale, one of Fator\u2019s puppet creations was worked into the band. The record labels had noticed, and prepared to offer a contract, they wanted Fator to lose the puppet.\u00a0 \u00a0Fator walked away.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His story is inspiring for everyone who dares to chase their dreams, nothing short of the American dream.\u00a0 Fator\u2019s unwavering commitment moved forward as he fine-tuned his act.\u00a0 He presents a unique combination of comedy, celebrity impersonations and non-celebrity voices through ventriloquism, and plenty of music.\u00a0 He spent years performing endless Birthday parties, corporate events, and county fairs, as he longed for his big break. That big break happened when he hit the second season of\u00a0 \u2018America\u2019s Got Talent\u2019, and the rest is history.<\/span><\/p>\n

In additon to his Las Vegas shows, Fator also penned a book, \u201cWho\u2019s The Dummy Now\u201d in 2008, and released a country album, \u201cIt Starts Tonight\u201d in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, Walter T. Ardale, a country singer puppet, is one among over a dozen puppets used in Fator\u2019s act. When asked if Fator sometimes views his puppet creations as friends, or feels like they\u2019re his children, Fator is quick to remark, \u201cNo.\u00a0 They\u2019re neither.\u00a0 There is a very firm line drawn.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To say that Fator is the kid who didn\u2019t grow up is pretty accurate.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m a big kid, both on and off the stage.\u00a0 I\u2019m married, and we don\u2019t have kids, but my wife would say I am a large child at heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Fator explained the creation process of a puppet. \u201cSure, there\u2019s a small part of me in each of them.\u00a0 But I\u2019m an observer. Comics have that quality.\u00a0 It\u2019s from observing real people that my characters are born.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It was time to have Fator play a little game.\u00a0 Let\u2019s suppose, in this fantasy situation, that you were awarded two tickets to the following events.\u00a0 The only catch is you had to bring a puppet as your plus one, so which puppet would you bring with you to\u2026 the super bowl?<\/span><\/p>\n

Fator laughed.\u00a0 \u201cWow.\u00a0 It would have to be Duggie.\u00a0 Duggie Scott Walker. \u00a0He would be there for the beer and the party.\u201c\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>How about a fine dining restaurant?<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDefinitely Vikki (The Cougar).\u00a0 She loves to socialize.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>And who would you bring to the Academy Awards?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThat would be Berry Fabulous,\u201d Fator laughs, \u201cHe would fit right in.\u00a0 That\u2019s his catch-phrase\u201d, as Fator sang, \u201cI\u2019m Fab-u-lous!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>How about the opera?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWinston.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>And how about a Nashville Country music jam?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWalter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Ok, now let\u2019s say you had some time to discover the Lehigh Valley.\u00a0 Who would you bring along to the Crayola Crayon Factory?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cEmma (Taylor).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>And a Yuengling beer tour?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThat would have to be Duggie.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s easy to see that Fator is passionate about his work, and also very passionate about military charities as well.\u00a0 Fator donates 100% of the profit of the sales of his merchandise to two charities, both of which have wounded warrior programs, The Airpower Foundation and The Snowball Express.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for any spoilers, on what to expect from his upcoming performance at The Sands, Fator isn\u2019t about to give it all away. \u201cDuggie will be there.\u00a0 But I will tell you this,\u201d he said with excitement, \u201cthe show is completely different from my Vegas show.\u00a0 It will make everyone happy, and feel fabulous! They will be left with a feeling like they\u2019re on top of the world.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It comes easy for Fator to put an audience at ease and to share his extraordinary gift as one of the world\u2019s best entertainers.\u00a0 As he is the type of man not to rest on laurels, he is also working on a new music album.\u00a0 \u00a0For Terry Fator, the road may have been long journey, but he has reached his destination at the top. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
