The Allentown Police Department\u2019s \u201cTeam Beny\u201d will donate $1,200 to Lehigh County Humane Society at a presentation on Thursday, December 6 at 11:00am at the society headquarters at 640 Dixon Street.<\/p>\n
The donation is being made in memory of K9 Beny who served the department for more than seven years before developing cancer and retiring from the department in 2015.\u00a0 K9 Beny passed away in 2017.<\/p>\n
K9 Beny\u2019s handler, Officer Matt Geake, and Officer Jim Stanko are making the presentation.\u00a0 They were among a team of officers that raised the funds for the donation from a Spartan Race on July 14 at Blue Mountain Ski resort.<\/p>\n
Beny was not only Officer Geake\u2019s partner and best friend, but a member of the families, both his blue family and his home family.\u00a0 As Officer Geake repeated so well, \u201cThere is no greater bond than a man and his dog.\u201d<\/p>\n
K9 Beny was certified in patrol work and in more than 25 different odors in explosives detection.\u00a0 During his career with the department, K9 Beny and Officer Geake completed explosives searches for past presidents, vice presidents and international dignitaries.<\/p>\n
K9 Beny conducted hundreds of demonstrations for people of all ages: school aged children, special needs children, middle and high schools and a wide range of adults.<\/p>\n
In December 2014 K9 Beny required surgery for a large tumor between his heart and lungs.\u00a0 His chances of survival without this procedure were very slim.\u00a0 Two amazing veterinarians are credited with saving his life.\u00a0 K9 Beny not only recovered, but healed and continued his life.<\/p>\n
Officer Geake and K9 Beny were an award winning team.\u00a0 They captured first place in the \u201ccall off\u201d event and second place in the \u201cobedience\u201d category during the Salisbury Township Police Department\u2019s 2013 K9 Police Trials.<\/p>\n
