{"id":86359,"date":"2019-02-28T16:51:12","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T21:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=86359"},"modified":"2019-02-28T16:51:12","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T21:51:12","slug":"valley-youth-house-receives-10000-in-eitc-funding-from-ppl-electric-utilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=86359","title":{"rendered":"Valley Youth House Receives $10,000 in EITC Funding from PPL Electric Utilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #1e284a; font-family: Helvetica;\">BETHLEHEM, PA<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Valley Youth House (VYH) has received $10,000 via Educational Improvement Tax Credits (EITC) from PPL Electric Utilities that will provide STEM camp to youth at Valley Youth House&#8217;s Camp Fowler.<\/p>\n<p>This funding will provide a free, week-long overnight STEM camp at Camp Fowler, the agency-owned 43-acre camp located in Orefield, PA. Camp Fowler utilizes adventure-based, outdoor therapeutic recreation that fosters personal empowerment and improved communication, providing a unique blend of experiences that builds confidence and critical thinking skills in an informal setting. Children attending the camp will be low-income, urban middle school children (rising 6th, 7th and 8th grade students). On-site educational STEM activities will be provided by DaVinci Science Center staff, utilizing the camp\u2019s unique resources.<\/p>\n<p>The following are the primary goals for the five-day STEM camp:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop critical thinking skills for up to 40 youth through adventure-based experiential learning<\/li>\n<li>Engage students in STEM through activities that:\n<ul>\n<li>Explore personal interests<\/li>\n<li>Are culturally responsive<\/li>\n<li>Include comprehensive services, such as counseling\/behavior health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Stimulate greater student interest in pursuing a STEM-related career<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe view partnering with local organizations like Valley Youth House as vital to improving the communities where our customers and employees live and work,\u201d said Carol Obando-Derstine, PPL Electric Utilities\u2019 regional affairs director.\u00a0 \u201cEvery day, these organizations make sure kids throughout the Lehigh Valley don\u2019t fall through the cracks. These organizations also expose youth to STEM education, which prepares them for jobs of the future.
