{"id":87131,"date":"2019-04-12T14:46:58","date_gmt":"2019-04-12T18:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=87131"},"modified":"2019-04-12T14:46:58","modified_gmt":"2019-04-12T18:46:58","slug":"allentown-earns-40th-tree-city-usa-designation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=87131","title":{"rendered":"ALLENTOWN EARNS 40TH TREE CITY USA DESIGNATION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The non-profit Arbor Day Foundation is recognizing Allentown as a Tree City USA for the 40<sup>th<\/sup> year!<\/p>\n<p>The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.\u00a0 The city received written notification of the award this week.<\/p>\n<p>The community also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating environmental improvement and higher level of tree care.<\/p>\n<p>There are four standards to achieve Tree City USA recognition.\u00a0 The municipality must have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program with annual expenditures of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very proud to mark 40 years as a Tree USA community,\u201d said Mayor Ray O\u2019Connell.\u00a0 \u201cTrees beautify the city.\u00a0 They provide shade to our neighborhoods and bring clean air and clean water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Allentown Parks Department planted 575 trees in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand,&#8221; said Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation. &#8220;Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it&#8217;s through volunteer engagement or public education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the Foundation, \u201cProperly placed trees can increase property values from 7\u201320%.
