SIZZLE!\u00ae<\/sup> Summer Literacy Camp Kicked Off Monday<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hovercrafts, MeLVin, children\u2019s author and more are ready to educate<\/em><\/p>\n

and entertain about 170 EASD students in grades K-5<\/em><\/p>\n

(EASTON) \u2014 Starting June 24, ProJeCt of Easton welcomed about 170 low-income, at-risk children in grades K-5 to SIZZLE!\u00ae<\/sup>, a literacy-based, 6-week summer camp at Paxinosa Elementary School\u00a0in Easton that addresses and prevents \u201cthe summer slide.\u201d<\/p>\n

SIZZLE!\u00ae<\/sup> is based on nationally recognized research that shows the need for, and benefit of, high-quality summer learning opportunities for low-income children. Research done by Rand Education says that on average, children from low-income families lose more reading comprehension and word recognition during the summer than children from higher-income families.<\/p>\n

The camp includes a variety of activities that are perfect for photo and\/or video opportunities. Clifford the Big Red Dog welcomed the children on Monday. (Photos attached.) Here are just some of the other highlights of camp:<\/p>\n

Tuesday-Thursday, June 25 -27:<\/strong> Students will ride a hovercraft built by Lafayette College engineering students.<\/p>\n

Thursday, June 27, 6 to 7:30 p.m.<\/strong>: Family Fun Night for campers and their parents; the theme is \u201cCandyland.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tuesday, July 2, 12:30 to 1 p.m.<\/strong>: MeLVin, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms mascot, brings the Phantoms\u2019 anti-bullying program \u201cBully Busters Unite!\u201d to SIZZLE!\u00ae<\/p>\n

Wednesday, July 3, 9:15 to 11:15 a.m.: <\/strong>Visit from Police Officer and K-9<\/p>\n

Tuesday, July 16, 12:30 p.m.:<\/strong> Children\u2019s author Peter Catalanotto (Monkey and Robot, The Newbies, Ivan the Terrier <\/em>and more)<\/em><\/p>\n

Thursday, July 18, 6-7:30 p.m.:<\/strong> Literacy Luau Family Fun Night (food donated by Colonial Pizza)<\/p>\n

Monday, July 22, 12:30 p.m.:<\/strong> Rainforest animals from the Lehigh Valley Zoo visit SIZZLE!\u00ae<\/p>\n

Thursday, July 25, 10 a.m.:<\/strong> All campers are going to see Macbeth at the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival\u2019s Shakespeare for Kids for free, thanks to the Shakespeare Festival\u2019s Free Will program<\/p>\n

Wednesday, July 31:<\/strong> SIZZLE!\u00ae\u00a0 Olympics\/ Field Day<\/p>\n

Thursday, August 1:<\/strong> SIZZLE Talent Showcase<\/p>\n
