{"id":93346,"date":"2019-07-05T18:44:13","date_gmt":"2019-07-05T22:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=93346"},"modified":"2019-07-05T18:44:13","modified_gmt":"2019-07-05T22:44:13","slug":"anything-goes-at-muhlenberg-july-11-28","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=93346","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Anything Goes&#8217; at Muhlenberg, July 11-28"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MSMT\u2019s production of Porter\u2019s Jazz Age classic offers virtuoso tap numbers, musical standards, and veteran MSMT performers, July 11-28<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Allentown, Pa. \u2014 Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre rounds out the 2019 season with an all-star production of Cole Porter\u2019s classic Jazz Age musical \u201cAnything Goes.\u201d The show features dance routines by acclaimed tap teacher and choreographer Shelley Oliver, as well as performances by some audience-favorite Summer Music Theatre performers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The show runs July 11-28 in Muhlenberg\u2019s Baker Theatre. Tickets and information are available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muhlenberg.edu\/academics\/theatre-dance\/smt\/\">muhlenberg.edu\/smt<\/a> and 484-664-3333.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The cast features Mia Scarpa in the starring role of Reno Sweeney. An Actors\u2019 Equity performer, Scarpa has appeared previously on the MSMT stage, to great acclaim, as Dolly in 2015\u2019s \u201cHello, Dolly!\u201d and as Mama Rose in 2016\u2019s \u201cGypsy.\u201d Also starring are MSMT veterans Jarrod Yuskauskas, as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (\u201cMy Fair Lady,\u201d \u201cGypsy,\u201d \u201cHello, Dolly!\u201d \u201cSpamalot\u201d) and Bob Fahringer as Moonface Martin (many MSMT credits, most recently \u201cMy Fair Lady\u201d), as well as Equity Guest Artist Jim VanValen as Elisha Whitney.<\/p>\n<p>Acclaimed tap choreographer Shelley Oliver choreographed the production. A longtime member of the Muhlenberg dancey faculty, Oliver has appeared internationally with some of the legends of the tap world, including Savion Glover and Gregory Hines. She is a founding member of Manhattan Tap and the Shelley Oliver Tap Dancers, among many other credits on the stage, on television, and in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>MSMT founding artistic director Charles Richter directs the production. Bryan L. Wade provides musical direction. Tony Award nominee Michael McDonald designed costumes. John Raley designed the towering cruise ship set, with lighting design by Gertjan Houben and sound design by Ian Scot.<\/p>\n<p>Cole Porter\u2019s classic Jazz Age musical \u201cAnything Goes\u201d stands among the most beloved of the 1930s, featuring timeless standards like \u201cI Get a Kick Out of You,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re the Top,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s De-lovely,\u201d \u201cFriendship,\u201d \u201cBlow, Gabriel, Blow,\u201d and the title song, an anthem of the age. The show helped to establish Porter as one of Broadway\u2019s all-time great songwriters.<\/p>\n<p>A delightfully silly tale of love, deception, and hijinks on the high seas, \u201c<em>Anything Goes<\/em>\u201d the concerns madcap antics aboard an ocean liner\u00a0bound from New York to London. Billy Crocker is a stowaway in love with heiress Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh.\u00a0Nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and Public Enemy #13, \u201c<em>Moonface<\/em>\u201d Martin, aid Billy in his quest to win Hope.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis show is like a vacation,\u201d Says director Charles Richter. \u201cCole Porter\u2019s whimsical libretto conjures nostalgia for oceans you\u2019ve never crossed.\u201d \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The show features a book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman, after an original book by P.G. Wodehouse, Guy Bolton, Howard Lindsay, and Russel Crouse. Porter wrote the music and lyrics.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe songs in this show are so elegant they leave me breathless,\u201d Richter says. \u201cIt has some of the most beautiful lyrics and music ever heard on Broadway. The story becomes a wonderful frame for an astonishing range of magnificent songs.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything Goes\u201d opens Thursday, July 11, and runs through July 28 in the Baker Theatre. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with 2 p.m. matinees the first Saturday and every Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $35 for the first four performances of each show, $41 thereafter, with discounts for seniors, students, youth, and groups of 15 or more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tickets are available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muhlenberg.edu\/academics\/theatre-dance\/smt\/\">muhlenberg.edu\/SMT<\/a>, or at box office at 484.664.3333, Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1848, Muhlenberg College is a highly selective, private, four-year residential college located in Allentown, PA., approximately 90 miles west of New York City.
