The 2019 books and authors selected for the luncheon are:

Talent

by Juliet Lapidos

Talent is a modern-day exploration of the parable of the talents. Coursing through a fictionalized New Haven, it follows a narrator of spectacular loathsomeness who ends up an object of considerable sympathy. This short, hilarious, and hugely intelligent novel is a many-layered labyrinth of possible truths that reveals at each turn the great danger of interpreting another person’s intentions, literary or otherwise.

Grist Mill Road

by Christopher J. Yates

Grist Mill Road is a mesmerizing thriller that will have you in its grip from the very first page. The year is 1982 and three young friends—Patrick, Matthew, and Hannah—are bound together by a terrible and seemingly senseless crime. A compelling tale of love, rage, fear and guilt, this is a harrowing novel that’s perfect for readers looking for a psychological suspense story with a literary bent.

The Paragon Hotel

by Lyndsay Faye

Fasten your seatbelt and get ready for a wild ride into the time of Prohibition – from the jazz-filled clubs of Harlem to sleepy Portland, Oregon. While The Paragon Hotel is a stunning work of historical fiction that is primarily about inequality and power struggles, it also delves into friendships that defy color lines and gender norms. Superbly written, this tale explores racism, violence, and extremist groups in America in the 1920’s.

“Luncheon with the Authors gives the public an excellent opportunity, right here in Allentown, to hear candid presentations by three authors about their current books–each of which is engrossing in its own way,” said Corliss Bachman, President of SOTA. “Guests can meet and speak personally with the authors, and pose questions during the panel discussion. It’s great to read the books before the luncheon, but it’s also OK not to. Come, listen, and get the inside scoop.”

SOTA Luncheon With The Authors Committee members spent months reading more than a dozen books before deciding on these three selections. The group began the reading process back in January and chose the authors based not just on their story telling abilities, which was a main priority, but also on how they would be as panelist, providing lively discussion with the event attendees.

Premium Authors’ Table seating gives guests an opportunity to sit with their choice of author during the event (limited availability), offering an intimate setting to get to know the author over a delicious lunch.
