The Allentown Health Bureau and its partner agencies will conduct two Car Seat Check Events in the city next week as part of National Child Passenger Safety Week which runs from September 15 through September 21.<\/p>\n
This campaign is dedicated to helping parents and caregivers make sure their children ride as safely as possible \u2013 every trip, every time. This year\u2019s theme, \u201cClick it Tight. It\u2019s Worth Their Life to do it Right\u201d highlights the need for all children to buckle-up using the right car seat, booster seat, or seat belt every time they travel.<\/p>\n
Motor vehicle crash injuries remain the leading cause of death of children. Using a car seat that is age \u2013 and size-appropriate is the best way to keep a child safe.<\/p>\n
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Agency (NHTSA), in 2017, 312 children under five years of age were saved because they were using restraints.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery 32 seconds in 2017, a child under 13 was involved in a vehicle crash,\u201d said David Synnamon, Injury Prevention Manager for the Allentown Health Bureau. \u201cCar seats matter and having the right car seat installed and used the right way is critical.\u201d<\/p>\n
In Pennsylvania, children under the age of two must be secured in a rear-facing car seat, and children under the age of four must be restrained in an approved child safety seat. Children must ride in a booster until their eighth birthday.<\/p>\n
The two Car Seat Check events are open to the public to have their car seats inspected for correct installation. This service is free of charge and is being provided by the Allentown Health Bureau in conjunction with the Safe Kids Coalition of Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, the Bethlehem Health Bureau, the Lehigh Valley Health Network, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation, the Highway Safety Network and Lehigh Valley Pediatrics. Appointments are not required but are strongly encouraged.<\/p>\n
