Expired, unused and unwanted medications, including capsules, pills, liquid products, creams in containers and pet medications will be accepted.\u00a0 Syringes with needles and other sharps will not be accepted.\u00a0 This service is free; no identification is required, and no questions will be asked.<\/p>\n
Drug Take Back programs address a vital public safety and public health issue. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.\u00a0 Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.<\/p>\n
Drug overdoses in Pennsylvania have also increased dramatically in recent years and Allentown and the Lehigh Valley are no exception \u2013 overdose deaths have continued to rise in Allentown and Lehigh County over the last several years. In 2018, more than 4,400 Pennsylvanians died from a drug overdose.<\/p>\n
Prescription drug abuse has quadrupled in the past ten years; it now results in more deaths than all illicit street drugs combined. Almost all prescription drugs involved in overdoses are originally legally prescribed by physicians.<\/p>\n
Roughly 21 to 29 percent of patients prescribed opioids for chronic pain misuse them and between 8 and 12 percent develop an opioid use disorder. An estimated 4 to 6 percent who misuse prescription opioids transition to heroin. About 80 percent of people who use heroin first misused prescription opioids.<\/p>\n
\u201cTaking the simple step of cleaning out your medicine cabinet of old and unwanted prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines can significantly reduce the possibility of an accidental poisoning or intentional misuse by a family member,\u201d said Allentown Health Bureau Injury Prevention Manager David Synnamon.<\/p>\n
In addition, citizens are now advised that traditional methods for disposing of unused medicines \u2013 flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash \u2013 both pose potential safety and health hazards.<\/p>\n
Since the first Take Back day in 2010, more than 13,600 pounds of medication have been collected across Lehigh County.<\/p>\n
Persons who are unable to attend the October 26\u00a0events are reminded that a permanent collection box is available at the Allentown Police Department\u2019s Patrol Station at 10th<\/sup> & Hamilton streets.\u00a0 The police station collection box is located in the lobby of the building and is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.<\/p>\n The one-way collection boxes are bolted to the floor to prohibit removal of the boxes and retrieval of medications from within the boxes without proper authorization.<\/p>\n The collected medications are burned in an approved incinerator.<\/p>\n Information provided to TVL by: <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n
