{"id":976,"date":"2014-09-19T09:46:16","date_gmt":"2014-09-19T14:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/wordpress\/?p=976"},"modified":"2014-09-19T09:46:16","modified_gmt":"2014-09-19T14:46:16","slug":"city-of-allentowns-prepareathon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=976","title":{"rendered":"City of Allentown\u2019s PrepareAthon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CITY HOSTING PREPAREDNESS EVENT<\/p>\n<p>The public is invited to attend the City of Allentown\u2019s PrepareAthon!SM on Tuesday, September 30 from 3pm-to-7pm at Mack South Fire Station at 1902 Lehigh Street.<\/p>\n<p>The PrepareAthon!SM is the second such effort in the city and builds on the successes of the first event held this past April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeptember is National Preparedness Month,\u201d said Allentown Fire Department Deputy Chief of Operations Lee Laubach and the city\u2019s Emergency Management Coordinator. \u201c\u201dIt\u2019s the time to remind everyone of what they need to do to protect themselves, the members of their family and their pets in the event of a disaster emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>America\u2019s PrepareAthon!SM is a nationwide, community-based campaign for action to increase emergency preparedness and resilience through hazard-specific drills, group discussions and exercises conducted at the national level every fall and spring. Millions of people are registered to participate across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Allentown\u2019s PrepareAthon!SM is a collaboration of the Allentown Health Bureau, the Allentown Communications Center, Allentown EMS, fire and police departments, Allentown Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps (AVMRC), Children\u2019s Care Alliance, Lehigh County Emergency Management Agency, Lehigh County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, Lehigh Valley Health Network, Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living and Lehigh Valley County Animal Response Team (CART).<\/p>\n<p>Activities include\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Dial 9-1-1 Simulator<br \/>\n\u2022 Emergency Assistance Education including Text to 9-1-1<br \/>\n\u2022 Emergency Supply Kit assembly<br \/>\n\u2022 Fire extinguisher training<br \/>\n\u2022 Generator safety<br \/>\n\u2022 Hands-Only CPR<br \/>\n\u2022 Hand washing education station with glo-germs<br \/>\n\u2022 Lehigh County Alert emergency notification system demonstration<br \/>\n\u2022 Accelerant K9 demonstration<br \/>\n\u2022 Animal preparedness and response (including: demonstration of preparedness kits for cats and dogs, pet preparedness kit checklists &amp; labels)<br \/>\n\u2022 Virtual Health Village registration<br \/>\n\u2022 Photo opportunities with Cell Phone Sally, Red E Fox, Judge<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuperstorm Sandy taught us that disasters can happen in our own backyards,\u201d said Mayor Ed Pawlowski. \u201cAllentown may not have been hit as hard as the New Jersey coast, but we learned what it is like to be without electric power for days.
