{"id":97851,"date":"2020-01-22T10:47:53","date_gmt":"2020-01-22T15:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=97851"},"modified":"2020-01-22T10:47:53","modified_gmt":"2020-01-22T15:47:53","slug":"allentown-awarded-recycling-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=97851","title":{"rendered":"ALLENTOWN AWARDED RECYCLING GRANT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The City of Allentown will receive more than $315,000 in a Recycling Program Performance Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.\u00a0 The grant reflects the more than 18,125 tons of residential and commercial materials recycled by city residents and businesses in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Performance grants from the state are based on the type and weight of materials recycled from residential, commercial and drop-off recycling programs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe residents of Allentown and our business community have been enthusiastic participants in the recycling program,\u201d said Mayor Ray O\u2019Connell.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania Act 101 mandates curbside recycling in the state\u2019s larger municipalities (population over 10,000) and offers grants to be applied toward recycling program sustainability and enhancements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are able to provide quality services and programs to our residents and businesses as a result of these grants,\u201d said Ann Saurman, Manager of the Bureau of Recycling and Solid Waste.\u00a0 \u201cThis particular grant is based 100% on performance.\u00a0 I am very grateful to all our residents, businesses and schools for their outstanding participation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Allentown offers curbside recycling of newspaper, cardboard, paperboard, magazines, catalogs, mail, phone books and all types of white and colored paper; plastic bottles, jars, tubs and containers marked with numbers #1 through #7; glass bottles and jars (clear, brown and green); aluminum cans, foil and pie plates; and steel cans, all of which count towards the Performance Grant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the city collects yard waste, appliances and large metal items and holds \u201cby appointment\u201d collection events for TVs and electronics for Allentown residents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s recycling programs reach all 36,675 households and approximately 500 businesses that participate in a once a week city curbside collection program.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>City residents are able to recycle their clothing and electronics from their doorstep through a one-year pilot program with <strong>retrievr<\/strong>, the first software service designed to make curbside recycling of these items as simple as a text message, to schedule an appointment.\u00a0 While this service is free for most items, there are fees to collect TVs and CRT computer monitors.\u00a0 Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/retrievr.com\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/retrievr.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1579792642759000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFuSqycBJqhyr5QP6CI60srxU25pw\">retrievr.com<\/a> or <strong>text PICKUP to 757-70-FETCH<\/strong> (757-703-3824) to schedule your pickup date.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The goals of the Act are to reduce Pennsylvania\u2019s municipal waste generation;
