{"id":99607,"date":"2020-02-20T22:02:11","date_gmt":"2020-02-21T03:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=99607"},"modified":"2020-02-20T22:02:11","modified_gmt":"2020-02-21T03:02:11","slug":"allentown-pothole-hotline-in-operation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/?p=99607","title":{"rendered":"ALLENTOWN POTHOLE HOTLINE IN OPERATION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The City of Allentown\u2019s Pothole Hotline is operational for the 2020 season.<\/p>\n<p>Motorists who run over a pothole on streets maintained by the city are urged to report it by one of three methods: the city\u2019s Pothole Hotline at 610-437-8775, the city\u2019s 311 Reporter App or by sending an email by accessing the city website.<\/p>\n<p>The Streets Department recording asks callers to give the exact location of the pothole. They should provide their name and telephone number in case the city needs to reach them to ascertain a more precise location.\u00a0 Callers can reach the Pothole Hotline 24 hours a day, seven days a week.<\/p>\n<p>An icon on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allentownpa.gov\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.allentownpa.gov\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1582330431574000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFTEn4xuiWXOMbImXuTKIyCoPaMnA\">www.allentownpa.gov<\/a> homepage links directly to the pothole page in the Public Works Department.\u00a0 Visitors to the pothole page can send an email directly to the Streets Department via a drop-down box.<\/p>\n<p>Citizens using the 311 Reporter App are able to quickly report problems or observations through the application.\u00a0 The reports are delivered to city staff through the city\u2019s GIS mapping system.\u00a0 Staff members have access to an Operations Map &amp; dashboard where reports can be reviewed and assigned to the appropriate part of the agency.<\/p>\n<p>A streets department crew fills potholes using a PB Patcher unit that is fully self-contained and can be installed on any single axle dump truck.\u00a0 The unit has the capability of keeping hot mix material workable all day.\u00a0 The city has a goal of repairing potholes on high traffic volume roads within 24 hours and lower volume streets in 24-to-48 hours.\u00a0 If a complaint is received of a very large pothole, a supervisor is sent to the scene in a reasonable period of time to determine if immediate action is warranted.<\/p>\n<p>According to Public Works Department Deputy Director Mark Shahda pothole patching is a top priority.\u00a0 \u201cWe have at least one crew assigned to pothole repairs daily.\u00a0 We want to get to them as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a relatively mild winter, the streets department filled 9,566 potholes in 2019.\u00a0 That compares very favorably to the nearly 19,000 that were filled in the winter of 2017-2018.<\/p>\n<p>Potholes result from the freeze-thaw cycle.\u00a0 Water seeps beneath the pavement through cracks caused by the wear and tear of vehicle travel.\u00a0 As the temperatures fall below freezing at night, the water becomes ice and expands below the pavement, forcing the pavement to rise.
