Citizens Christmas City Committee Will Hang 200 Ornaments in Payrow Plaza

Bethlehem, PA (November 10, 2021) – Bethlehem’s Citizens Christmas City Committee will decorate the annual Christmas City Trellis with hundreds of ornaments honoring local educators, both current and retired, on November 12. The trellis is a popular outdoor exhibit featuring musical chimes and ornaments. Each ornament is engraved with a local educator’s name. “Teachers and other educators dedicated themselves to helping others even as they faced their own personal pandemic struggles. They are certainly community heroes,” said Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce VP Angela DelGrosso.

Ornaments Created from Repurposed Pandemic Plastic

The ornaments hold symbolic significance. “We’re transforming the plexiglass that Bethlehem businesses used as separators during the height of the pandemic, thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, into intricate and beautiful designs,” said DelGrosso. “It represents how our community has overcome so much during the past two years.”

Alloy5 architecture designed this year’s custom ornaments which Northampton Community College’s Fab Lab laser cut.

Christmas Trellis Unveiling

The Citizen’s Christmas City Committee of the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce will unveil this year’s display during a virtual tree lighting ceremony and concert on November 19th at 5pm. The trellis display will remain up at Payrow Plaza through mid January.

Since the city first put up the trellis in 2015, it has become a holiday season highlight. DelGrosso said, “Community traditions like this are hot cocoa for the soul. They warm and comfort us throughout challenging times,” said DelGrosso.

Family and friends nominated educators to be included on this year’s ornaments. They will hang from the exhibit’s chimes throughout the holiday season. When the display comes down, the educators can keep their ornaments.
