ALLENTOWN, PA — On Thursday, May 9, 2024, the Allentown School District School Board of Directors approved the establishment of the Allentown Summer Artificial Intelligence Institute (ASAII) for 2024 for 20 Allentown School District High School students.

During the eight-week program, ASAII students will attend classes at the DeSales University Hub at 932 Hamilton Avenue in downtown Allentown, and receive incentivized training in data analytics and AI technologies. Participants will dedicate 36 hours per week to the program and will receive a stipend of up to $4,355, along with six credits from DeSales University, daily transportation, breakfast and lunch.

Students will study the data analytics process, including question development, data collection, preparation for analysis, statistical application, visualization, and articulation of findings.

Working alongside local partners such as the City of Allentown’s Office of Civic Innovation, Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Pool Center for Health Analytics, and IotaComm’s Center for Sustainable Innovation, students will engage with practical, real-world datasets.

“We are thrilled to launch the Summer AI Institute in partnership with DeSales University,” said Dr. Carol D. Birks, Allentown School District’s Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer. “This initiative not only offers students college credits and valuable experience, but it will also equip them with the practical skills necessary to become leaders in data analytics and artificial intelligence. By providing such opportunities, we empower our students to excel in this rapidly expanding field.”

ASAII prepares students for diverse career paths and recognizes the increasing demand for data analysis and AI expertise across industries such as business, healthcare, social services, engineering, government, and education.

“We especially want to thank Senator Nick Miller for helping us to forge this partnership,” continued Superintendent Birks.

Interested students should contact their school counselors for application information. Applications are due by Friday, May 24, 2024.
