May 2025 article- Mental Health Awareness Month

“Be Kind to your Mind. Mental Health Matters”

We are often reminded that our physical health is important, and we should be intentional to have routine appointments to check medical conditions, eat healthily, and exercise. But how often are we reminded that we all also have mental health necessities too?

Mental health awareness month teaches us to consider this: It helps to break down the stigma of old beliefs and creates an opportunity to learn something new and offer empathy to ourselves and others. It encourages us to normalize open and honest conversations to make it easier and comfortable for others to share their vulnerabilities. The increased awareness can improve access to necessary resources and enhance overall well-being for individuals and society as a whole.

A common daily task that I often encourage my clients to establish, and I participate in as well are positive affirmations. Here are a few to help you get started:

“I am doing the best that I can at this moment.”

“I am worthy, and I am enough.”

“My feelings are valid.”

“I deserve to feel heard, seen, understood, and safe.”

“My boundaries are important, and it is okay to say no.”

“It is okay to ask for help.”

At times, it is difficult for others to understand how we are feeling as mental health can often feel invisible for others to notice. It is necessary for us to surround ourselves with genuine support, whether that consists of your family, friends, neighbors, your church, or your therapist. Along with your daily affirmations, I would also suggest keeping a journal to either release your thoughts or express your gratitude for the day. On our rough days, I encourage you to celebrate your small wins. This can consist of getting out of bed, taking a shower, or eating a healthy meal. Each of us is on our own healing journeys and that can look different from someone else. Try not to compare yourself to others but instead be open to becoming a healthier version of yourself each day. We are all lifelong students and a work in progress. We can embrace our growth and transformation on the journey we call life.
