UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Birders, nature lovers, conservationists and other Lehigh Valley residents can discover the fascinating world of bats — their biology, cultural significance and vital role in ecosystems — by attending an upcoming Penn State Extension event.
“Tap Talks: All About Bats” will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 8 at Gallows Hill Spirits Co., 2208 S. 12th St., Allentown.
Organizers noted that this event will cover the biology, unique adaptations and ecological importance of bats, which are the only mammals capable of sustained flight. Attendees can learn how echolocation, wing structure and diverse diets enable bats to thrive, while also exploring their cultural significance — from symbols of luck and renewal in Chinese traditions to their darker associations in Western folklore.
The session also will examine the challenges bats face today — including habitat loss, climate change and white-nose syndrome — and will highlight global conservation efforts aimed at protecting these vital species and the biodiversity they support.
This session is part of Tap Talks, a series that highlights water quality and watershed-related topics through presentations by local water resource professionals and Penn State Extension Master Watershed Stewards. Designed to be fun and informative, Tap Talks are held at various venues across Pennsylvania.
Penn State Extension offers this event at no charge, but organizers encourage preregistration by noon Oct. 8.
