EASTON, Pa.—Greater Lehigh Valley Writers’ Group (GLVWG) will hold its monthly meeting from 10 a.m. – noon on Saturday, November 22, 2025. The meeting is offered in a hybrid format—in-person at the Palmer Branch of the Easton Library, 1 Weller Place, Palmer, PA, and online via Zoom.
Membership business will be conducted from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. From 11 a.m.-12 noon, author and forensic psychologist Dr. Katherine Ramsland will present “Cooking Up Hooks: The Psychology of Grabbing and Keeping Your Readers”. To inject narrative momentum, you need hooks—not just the one that grips readers on page one. Hooks occur all the way through, aiding the mood, pace, and voice. They work because our brain is hardwired for expectation, which sets us up for both surprise and satisfaction. Types of hooks will be explored, the way they work, and where to place them in your story.
Ramsland is a professor, consultant, and author of books primarily focused on forensic psychology and criminology. She has appeared as an expert in criminal psychology on more than 250 crime documentaries and magazine shows, is an executive producer of Murder House Flip, and has consulted for CSI, Bones, and The Alienist. She has written more than 1,800 articles and 73 books, including The Forensic Science of CSI, The Forensic Psychology of Criminal Minds, How to Catch a Killer, The Psychology of Death Investigations, The Serial Killer’s Apprentice, and Confession of a Serial Killer: The Untold Story of Dennis Rader, The BTK Killer.
Ramsland will continue exploring “Cooking Up Hooks” during an afternoon workshop scheduled for 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Registration is required for the afternoon program. Cost is free for members; $15 for non-members payable via AccuPay. Any person under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for any GLVWG event.
