The Literacy Center to honor three former graduates during annual Faces of Literacy event in Allentown



ALLENTOWN, PA – April 12, 2024 – Knowledge is power, and for three Lehigh Valley men, the power they gained from what they learned at The Literacy Center has not only helped their careers, it has empowered them.

On Tuesday, April 30, the Allentown-based non-profit organization will hold its annual Faces of Literacy fundraising event at Muhlenberg College to honor three students who graduated from its programs. Their personal journeys will be shared through a series of videos produced by Allentown-based photographer and videographer Marco Calderon, himself a graduate and former board member of The Literacy Center.

  • Miguel Eduardo Callejas Uribe, Originally from Columbia, English as a Second Language (ESL) Program Graduate and Administrative Training Program Graduate. Miguel is currently employed as a Quality Control Specialist III at B. Braun Medical Inc.
  • Angel Soto, originally from Puerto Rico, GED Program. He is currently employed as Lead Chef at BJ’s Brewhouse.
  • Duvan Cano, originally from Columbia, Administrative Training Program Graduate and ESL Program Graduate. Duvan is employed by The Literacy Center as an Adult Learning Senior Coordinator.

Women United – an affinity group of The United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley – will be honored as the Community Partner of the Year for its continued support of The Literacy Center. For the past decade, United Way Women United has proudly partnered with The Literacy Center to improve the lives of women, children and families through Women Rising. This critical job training program provides a pathway to success, and it’s vital to invest in women and the organizations that support them.

The Literacy Center will also honor a Champion of Literacy, Gayle Cichocki. She has volunteered as a GED Math tutor for the last 10 years. Gayle and her husband have donated regularly to TLC over the last few years.

Program Details

Who: The Literacy Center staff, board of directors, volunteers, sponsors and supporters as well as local dignitaries

What: Videos showcasing three former students journeys and experience with The Literacy Center’s programs will be shown. Awards will be given to Community Partner and Champion of Literacy.

When: Tuesday, April 30, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 PM; program begins at 6:30 PM

Where: Moyer Hall at Muhlenberg College, 2400 Chew Street, Allentown

Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased through The Literacy Center web site – https://theliteracycenter-lv.org/faces-of-literacy-tickets/. The event also includes a cocktail reception before and after the program.
