Trexlertown, PA — This Friday, August 1, the Valley Preferred Cycling Center (VPCC) will host the annual Artie Greenberg Memorial Trophy Race, a night dedicated to honoring one of the facility’s most iconic figures. With track records and bragging rights on the line, this electrifying evening features a 10-mile scratch race for elite men and a 5-mile scratch race for elite women—two of the most grueling and prestigious events in American track cycling.
The records currently standing are:
- Men’s 10-Mile Record: 18:12.5, set by Bobby Lea of Topton, PA in 2015
- Women’s 5-Mile Record: 10:36.1, set by Lucy Tyler of Largo, FL in 1995
Could 2025 be the year they fall?
“From riders to race officials, the history of this velodrome is rich with larger-than-life personalities,” said Jake Burns, VPCC Marketing Consultant. “Artie Greenberg was one of them—and events like this give us the chance to not only chase records but to celebrate the deep roots and lasting legacy of cycling here in the Lehigh Valley. We’re proud to keep telling these stories through the racing that happens under our lights.”
The race honors Artie Greenberg, a pioneering wheel builder and one of the first American UCI officials. A New York City native who relocated to the Lehigh Valley for the velodrome, Greenberg made history in 1977 as the youngest person to pass the UCI international commissaire exam. Tragically, he passed away in 1980 following a vehicle accident. Today, this race stands as a tribute to his passion and impact on the sport.
In addition, the battle for Rider of the Year is tighter than ever at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center. With only a few Friday nights left to make moves, this week’s Artie Greenberg Memorial Trophy Race carries serious implications for the leaderboard.
In the Men’s standings, Louisiana’s Lance Abshire (Chaney Windows & Doors) holds a commanding lead with 43 points, followed by New Zealand’s Magnus Jamieson (New Zealand) and Pennsylvania’s Liam Trepte (TEAMBSR). On the Women’s side, veteran sprinter Jessica Chong leads with 52 points, with rising stars Jillian Halm (Kelly Benefits Strategies Cycling) and Reagen Pattishall (Turbo Velo Pickle Juice) close behind.
