ALLENTOWN, PA — Ce-Ce Gerlach, candidate for State Representative in Pennsylvania’s 22nd District, is calling for a public, open debate among all candidates seeking the Democratic nomination in the upcoming special election.

Because the nomination will be determined through party leadership rather than a traditional primary election, Gerlach said transparency and meaningful public participation are essential.

“When voters don’t get to directly choose their nominee, the least we can do is ensure the process is open, visible, and accountable to the people who will be represented,” Gerlach said. “A public debate allows residents to hear directly from every candidate, understand our positions, and see how decisions that impact their lives are being made.”

The special election follows a vacancy in the 22nd District, which includes most of Center City Allentown, the East Side, and parts of Salisbury Township. Under the current process, precinct committee people make a recommendation that is sent to the Democratic Party’s State Executive Committee for final approval.

Gerlach said that structure makes public scrutiny especially important, noting many residents may not be aware of how the nominee is selected.

“Democracy doesn’t happen behind closed doors,” Gerlach added. “An open debate is a basic step toward restoring trust and ensuring the process serves voters — not insiders.”

Gerlach is calling for a publicly accessible debate for community members to attend and view ahead of the January 3 meeting where precinct committee people will make their recommendation. Details on dates, moderators, and venues will be announced once participation is confirmed.
