Meals on Wheels Celebrates its Supehero Volunteers and Acting Secretary of Aging Presents State Award at Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

The 2015 Volunteer Appreciation Dinner proved to be a wonderful evening celebrating our Superhero volunteers! Our volunteers enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared by Cura Hospitality and served by Hospitality students at LCCC. Dessert were amazing cupcakes from Helen Kuper of the Cakesmith. Volunteers participated in a tricky tray raffle with lovely prizes.

Meals on Wheels volunteers received awards for 100, 200, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 and 2500 hours of service. Andy Bednar, Cynthia Caddoo, Don Hoppes and Marty Wieszorek joined our wall of fame with 2500 hours of service.

One of our superhero volunteers was presented with a PA Dept. of Aging “Volunteer Spotlight Award.” Virginia Crone, 89, has been volunteering since 1973. Acting Secretary of Aging, Teresa Osborne, presented Virginia with this award. Tom Muller, LC Executive, presented Virginia with a proclamation from Lehigh County and Ellen Kern, Chief of Staff of Senator Pat Browne’s office, presented Virginia with proclamations from the PA Senate and House of Representatives.

Acting Secretary Osborne said: “Far too often we underestimate the power of a touch, smile, kind word, listening ear, or the smallest act of caring that can turn a life around.  And that is what each of you is being honored here do and we are incredibly grateful for your selfless and joy-filled service.”

When presenting the State award to Virginia Crone, she said: ” Since 1973, Virginia has been volunteering with Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County either delivered meals or driven the meal route ensuring that others have access to a meal that provides nourishment t for the body and soul. Her peaceful presence brings much comfort to meal recipients as she builds friendships with all who journey with her. Virginia ,who will turn 90 this November has delivered over 37,468 meals,  driven over 15,400 miles; and donated over 4,400 hours of her time. She is an inspiration to me …and a true blessing in her community.”
