Move over streaming services – Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas launches in-person film subscription series
BETHLEHEM, Pa.– Tired of streaming in solitude? Get off the couch and connect with friends as a member of The Unknown Planet Film Society, a brand-new cinema experience featuring a range of bold, dynamic films rarely seen on the big screen at the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas (FBAC). This new subscription-based series will feature mysterious films once a month in the cinema starting Wednesday, Jan. 18.
ArtsQuest Programming Coordinator Robert Delany and ArtsQuest Cinema Committee member Adrianna Gober have been hosting eye-opening movie nights in the FBAC for more than a year, taking turns surprising the other with off main-stream art house-style films. While the film enthusiasts share a similar taste, each brings a unique viewpoint in their selections; the full movie gambit is represented, from abstract experimental to radical Queer genres and everything in between. The movie nights always include a lively discussion centered around the featured film and after hosting the cinematic adventures for 12 months, a desire to share the experience with the community grew and The Unknown Planet Film Society was formed.
“The Unknown Planet Society is the type of program that epitomizes the role of independent cinemas in their communities,” said Delany. “Adrianna and I are looking forward to connecting audiences with films not found at multiplexes, highlighting medium-defining artists and fostering community through art. Our goal is to screen films that are rarely screened in movie theaters, titles that push boundaries and don’t necessarily fit into daily programming.”
Keeping the film titles under wraps, the pair will reveal hints leading up to the screening. The movie nights will also include additional surprises such as moderated talkbacks, live Q&As and pre-recorded interviews. This is not only a chance to see films that are rarely screened in the Lehigh Valley, but also to join a community of curious filmgoers who share their passion for the cinema.
“We want these screenings to be a comfortable place for people to share their experiences with the films, leading to an appreciation of the titles on a deeper level,” Delany said.
