A local Girl Scout is being recognized for an extraordinary act of bravery after saving her younger brother from drowning—earning one of the highest honors in Girl Scouting, the Medal of Honor. Less than ten Girl Scouts receive this honor annually across the country, which is awarded to girls who have saved or attempted to save a life in an emergency – often using skills learned through scouting.
Madeline, now a Girl Scouts of Eastern PA (GSEP) second-year Cadette, was formally presented with the award following her heroic actions when she was a Girl Scout Junior. While at a pool, her then 6-year-old brother unexpectedly slipped from the shallow end into deeper water. Without hesitation, Madeline jumped in and brought him to safety before others could react.
Earlier this year, Madeline was presented with the Medal of Honor by GSEP Board Member Ellen Lobst at one of GSEP’s camp properties in the Lehigh Valley, Camp Mountain House, during a community ceremony.
