Girls on the Run, a national non-profit organization geared towards helping young girls navigate social, emotional, and physical life experiences through team building, exercise, and comradery, is hosting a summer camp that will take place in Bethlehem Area School District within the upcoming month. “Our curriculum is so perfect for girls this age right now because they need to learn how to be social again [after COVID],” stated Liz Fones, Council Director of GOTR. “The Girls Have Heart camp is about navigating friendships.” Girls on the Run is not only focused on promoting young girls’ self-esteem and self-image, but also on teaching them the benefits of exercise, a healthy lifestyle, and working together with others, which will in turn be reflected in the curriculum taught at camp.

Camp GOTR will include games like scavenger hunts, crafting, and relay races balanced with exercises like the “Compliment Circle”, where girls will learn how to compliment one another, appreciating their differences while still working together as teammates.

As part of Bethlehem Area School District’s “Fun and Free in July in BASD”, Camp GOTR will be offered at the following schools for girls in 3rd-5th grade; Asa Packer Elementary, Governor Wolf Elementary, Marvine Elementary, Fountain Hill Elementary, and Clearview Elementary (including participants from Hanover Elementary, James Buchanan Elementary, and Clearview Elementary). “Camp GOTR is perfectly timed for this summer; it’s time to get outside, reconnect with caring coaches and friends, discover more about yourself, and have fun,” says Dr. Jack Silva, Assistant Superintendent & Chief Academic Officer of the Bethlehem Area School District. “The BASD is so fortunate to have GOTR well established in its schools, and it will be an important part of summer programming in July 2021.”
