Local craft beverage producer puts adoptable pets on cans of mead to find furrever homes. Now with bunnies!

LEHIGH VALLEY, PA— For a second time, the Colony Meadery is using mead to find homes foradorable animals.

The Colony Meadery- a Lehigh Valley producer of the gluten-free craft beverage, mead – is an incubation client in AEDC’s Bridgeworks Enterprise Center. The meadery has teamed up with local shelter Peaceable Kingdom by putting images of adoptable dogs and cats on their recent can release.

“There are very few good things about the last 18 months,” said Colony CEO and Co-Founder Greg Heller- LaBelle, “but one is that we all got more time with our pets. And people should go adopt more pets, because they are awesome.”

This year, the Colony partnered with local shelter Peaceable Kingdom, who is featuring cats, dogs and even, in a new twist, adoptable rabbits!

“Peaceable Kingdom would like to thank The Colony for giving our shelter this opportunity, to view some of our adoptable pets in this unique manner,” said Peaceable Kingdom Board Chair Kathy Tomecek. “We truly appreciate the time and talent that went into this endeavor.”

The Colony first stole the idea from breweries like Fargo Brewing Company and Motorworks Brewing in 2020. While the COVID-19 pandemic halted the first release (unfortunately scheduled for March 19, 2020), one of the dogs on the cans was adopted, which is 100% of what mattered about the effort, and so the meadery decided to bring back the cans this year.

The 2022 cans feature two cats (Cody and Daniel), a dog (Rosie), and a pair of rabbits (Jelly and Bean).

This year’s mead is a strawberry-rhubarb session mead, available at bit.ly/colonyship, and at the meadery’s two locations: 905 Harrison St Suite 115 Allentown, PA 18103 and 211 East Third St Bethlehem PA 18015.
