September 14, 2021, Allentown, Pa. — The Allentown School District Foundation (ASDF) is pleased to announce a $5000 Grant from the Bill Sugra Memorial Fund to support Teacher Innovation Grants (TIG) for the 2021-22 school year.  The Teacher Innovation Program was founded in 2010 with a small grant. Since that time, more than $143,000 has been granted to 147 teachers. Educators use the TIG grants to implement a new idea or teaching strategy to engage students and improve learning.

The Sugra Memorial Fund was created by Bill and El Sugra and Tracy Sell to honor their son and brother who was tragically killed in the terrorist acts of September 11, 2001.  The Sugra Memorial Fund has supported the ASD Foundation’s Teacher Innovation Grant program with $26,800 from 2015-2021. Their impact on Allentown teachers and students is immeasurable.  This year the TIG program is also supported by a grant from the Canova Foundation as well as by individual donors who contributed prior to the pandemic.

Grant applications are developed by ASD educators to bring Allentown students added, enriched learning experiences. Teachers, counselors, nurses, and coaches involved in teaching ASD students in one or more of our 25 public school buildings and/or online are invited to apply for grants up to $1200. Applications are reviewed and evaluated, and awards will be announced in December 2021. This competitive grant process is managed by a TIG Committee chaired by Jane Marks, retired ASD Teacher and Student Teaching Supervisor at Muhlenberg College. Applications are available on the ASD Foundation website (  The application deadline is Friday, October 22, 2021.
