Northampton County has been cited on the Federal Treasury website for its successful use of the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP). To prevent evictions, the County hired tenant navigators to complete networking within the courts and work to connect tenants to social services through a variety of partnerships.

“Our Department of Human Services worked closely with our Department of Community and Economic Development to prevent evictions through rent and utility assistance,” says Lamont McClure. “Their work and dedication helped prevent a surge of foreclosures and evictions during the pandemic. I’m glad to see the Treasury Department recognize their service to our residents.”

Northampton County has programs in place to assist residents to remain in their households while alleviating the financial burden on landlords. The Community Mediation and Eviction Diversion Program (CMED) mitigates evictions and reduces the burden on the local court system. Housing services are free to low-and-moderate income households and owners of rental units housing low-and-moderate income tenants. The CMED program can also help with utility payments.
