(ALLENTOWN, PA) – The Scouts of Troop 71 Macungie are participating in Scouting for Food, the Boy Scouts of America’s national program to collect food for local food banks or organizations that feed people in need held on Saturday, November 12, 2022. The troop has chosen the Allentown Rescue Mission as the recipient of its donations.

“The Allentown Rescue Mission aligns well with the Boy Scout Oath. They are a positive presence in the city of Allentown helping men to get spiritual healing, giving them direction, and providing them a place to live which is key to getting well again,” stated Chip Wachob on behalf of Troop 71 leadership.

The Scouts have set a collection goal of 2,000 lbs. of non-perishable food items for the one-day food drive. There are two ways to help them meet their goal. The Scouts will distribute traditional door hangers on November 5th and will pick up donations at these houses on November 12th. Additionally, the troop will run a drop-off site on November 12th from 8:00 am – 11:00 am at the Macungie Institute, 510 E. Main St., Macungie. Gift cards and monetary donations are also welcomed.

The Allentown Rescue Mission, a 501c3, 123 bed non-profit homeless shelter has been providing shelter for homeless men since 1900. In addition to emergency shelter services (365 days a year), the Allentown Rescue Mission offers a residential life skills program, and transitional employment on the Clean Team Workforce that’s available for hire to the community. The Clean Team Workforce pays the men above PA state minimum wage– helping them save a nest egg to transition back into the community. In a typical year, the Allentown Rescue Mission provides shelter services for over 946 men per year, and serves over 42,000 meals a year to men in need.
