The Literacy Center to Celebrate Program Graduates during annual Faces of Literacy Event in Allentown

ALLENTOWN, PA – April 21, 2023 – Knowledge is power, and for three Lehigh Valley women, the power they gained from what they learned at The Literacy Center has not only helped their careers, it has empowered them.

On Thursday, May 4, the Allentown-based non-profit organization will hold its annual Faces of Literacy fundraising event at Muhlenberg College to honor three students who graduated from its programs. Their personal journeys will be shared through a series of videos produced by Allentown-based photographer and videographer Marco Calderon, himself a graduate and former board member of The Literacy Center.

  • Monique Vorster – originally from South Africa, graduated from the GED program
  • Julieth Garcia – originally from Cali, Colombia, graduated from the English as a Second Language program
  • Jhosselyn Geldres – originally from Lima, Peru, graduated from the Administrative Professional Training Program

The event will also inform attendees about the important role literacy plays in the region’s economic development. Keynote speaker Don Cunningham, President and CEO of Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation, will discuss the positive economic benefits of a general education diploma (GED); how understanding English can raise income, increase employment, trade and other economic opportunities; and the value of our community that comes from continuous learning as an adult.

Muhlenberg College will be honored as the Community Partner of the Year for its continued support of The Literacy Center. In addition to hosting Faces of Literacy for several years, the college has also provided the organization with space for board meetings. The college’s students have completed internships and capstone projects in support of TLC’s mission.

A Champion of Literacy will also be honored, but the announcement is a surprise to be made that evening.

Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased through The Literacy Center web site – https://theliteracycenter-lv.org/faces-of-literacy-tickets/. The event also includes a cocktail reception before and after the program.

The Literacy Center would like to thank the following sponsors for supporting this year’s event:
