The First in Math Zip Code Challenge.

First in Math, an Easton-based company, is launching this initiative in conjunction with the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) to get kids and adults to talk about and engage with math in a fun way.

The five-day event begins tomorrow, May 23rd, and runs through May 27th. Kids and their families can participate by logging into the First in Math platform ( and begin playing to figure out which Montogomery County zip code has the most fearless mathematicians. All schools in the winning zip code will receive a prize at the end of the competition.

According to the state Department of Education — less than half of all PA elementary school students score proficient in mathematics. First in Math has a proven track record of building math skills in elementary students and Sen. Lisa Boscola would like to see this program adopted statewide. She’s put forth a current piece of legislation that aims to achieve this goal and the Zip Code Challenge is a pilot program that seeks to raise awareness of how fun math can be when it’s presented that way.

Here’s more background on the legislative effort.
