Northampton County Emergency Management Services is monitoring and in have been in contact with the National Weather Service about the smoke conditions in our County and surrounding areas. Visibilities across Northeast Pennsylvania and Northern New Jersey are being lowered due to smoke.

If you are seeing a haze or smelling an odor of something burning without a source, it is likely the wind carrying the smoke into our area from the wildfires being battled in Canada.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued a code orange air quality alert for the Lehigh Valley/Berks County area. A code orange air quality alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups. Sensitive groups include children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease, or other lung diseases, and the elderly. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercising outdoors.

National Weather Service anticipates that this odor and haze should dissipate by or around 10 pm this evening. Please travel with caution.
