AND CLASSES IN URBAN COMPOSTING AND GMOS

 

BETHLEHEM – March 10, 2016 – The Bethlehem Food Co-op will hold a member event and two educational classes this month as follows:

 


 

March Co-op New Member Sign-up Event

Sunday, March 131 – 3 p.m.

Seasons Olive Oil and Vinegar Taproom, Main Street

Free event

 

Last fall’s Member Event at Seasons was such a hit that Owner Tim Balshi invited the co-op back to do it again this month. The first 10 households to join the co-op during the event will receive a free bottle of olive oil or vinegar. There will also be tastings of olive oils, vinegars, and food from the charcuterie counter.

 


 

Urban Composting class

Sunday, March 131 – 4 p.m.

Northampton Community College’s Fowler Family Center Southside Campus

Co-op members – $9; non-members – $10

Advance registration and payment required.

 

Do you have an interest in growing your own food? Join us to learn how you can increase garden productivity with compost. Learn how easy making your own compost can be in our Urban Composting course. Joe Klinkhoff, long time fermenter, composter, cook, and gardener, will guide you through four small-batch composting methods suitable for the urban environment.

Understanding Food Choice series – “Get to Know GMO”

Saturday, March 2610:30 am – 12:30 p.m.

Bethlehem Area Public Library, Church St.

Co-op members – $9; non-members – $10

Advance registration and payment required.

 

Join us for an unbiased examination of GMOs and the GMO debate. We will take a critical look at the science, marketing, and economics of these crops and develop practical tools for making sense of it all in our everyday lives. Co-op Board Member and Coordinator of the NCC East 40 Community Garden Kelly Allen will lead this course. Proceeds from Bethlehem Food Co-op educational programs will be used to form a scholarship program to help all members of our community take part in Co-op ownership.

The Bethlehem Food Co-Op is owned by the community members it serves, and will support local producers and sustainable, humane, and natural food systems. Member-owners make a one-time $300 equity payment and will receive many perks, such as an equal voice in Co-op operations, opportunities for hands-on involvement, discount days, and access to unique educational opportunities. Monthly payment plans are available to accommodate those who would like to divide up the equity payment. The Co-op currently has 285 member-owners. The faster the Co-op gains member-owners, the sooner the store can open to serve the community.
