Washington, D.C. – Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, representing the Greater Lehigh Valley (PA-07), has joined Congressman Buddy Carter (GA-01) as a co-lead on the Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act of 2025, a bipartisan bill aimed at strengthening efforts to reduce maternal mortality across the country. This legislation builds on existing programs by providing critical funding to state-based Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs) and enhancing efforts to prevent maternal deaths, particularly among high-risk populations.
This effort builds on work that Congressman Mackenzie had done in the Pennsylvania State House where he championed maternal health, authoring the law that created the state’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee. That committee brought together healthcare and maternal health professionals to analyze maternal deaths, identify trends, and develop life-saving strategies.
“As a Pennsylvania State Representative, I worked to tackle the crisis of maternal mortality by authoring the law to create our state’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee,” said Congressman Mackenzie. “Now, it’s an honor to be able to take this fight to the US Congress as we work to ensure that pregnant mothers are getting the care and support that they need. By enhancing funding, strengthening review committees, and disseminating best practices, this bill will save lives and improve healthcare outcomes for families across the nation.”
“I’m proud to work with my bipartisan congressional colleagues on the Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act, which would improve health care outcomes for mothers at all stages of pregnancy. Georgians are severely impacted by our nation’s alarming and preventable maternal mortality crisis, and this bill will help ensure that all families have access to lifesaving health care resources,” said Rep. Carter.
The Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act of 2025 reauthorizes and strengthens the MMRCs, which examine cases of maternal death to determine risk factors, trends, and potential prevention strategies. The legislation includes key provisions such as:
- Reauthorizing funding for MMRCs and improving data collection to better understand the causes of maternal mortality.
- Supporting state and local initiatives to enhance maternal healthcare.
- Expanding the role of MMRCs in developing evidence-based solutions to reduce preventable maternal deaths.
- Improving coordination between federal and state programs to create a comprehensive approach to maternal health.
The Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act of 2025 builds upon those efforts, ensuring that the United States remains committed to protecting mothers and their newborns.
Congressman Mackenzie remains dedicated to advancing policies that support working families, improve access to healthcare, and reduce preventable maternal deaths.
