WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, representing the Greater Lehigh Valley (PA-07), is calling for an end to the practice of daylight savings time and the unnecessary practice of changing our clocks twice a year. The Congressman has cosponsored the Sunshine Protection Act of 2025 (H.R. 139), a bill aimed at making daylight saving time (DST) permanent across the country. The legislation, introduced by Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL), has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, where it is currently awaiting consideration.

This effort builds on Congressman Mackenzie’s work in the Pennsylvania State House, where he championed efforts to end the twice-yearly time change by introducing legislation to make DST permanent in the Commonwealth. Mackenzie has long advocated for the benefits of permanent DST, including improved public safety, increased economic activity, and reduced energy consumption.

“For too long, Americans have had to deal with the disruption of changing their clocks twice a year,” said Congressman Mackenzie. “Experts and the public agree: making daylight saving time permanent would provide consistency, improve our health, and increase economic activity.”

The Sunshine Protection Act of 2025 would repeal the current federal requirement to switch between standard time and daylight saving time, ensuring that clocks remain on DST year-round. It builds upon ongoing efforts to modernize the nation’s timekeeping policies and ensure that Americans can enjoy the benefits of a stable and predictable schedule.

The bill includes key provisions such as:

  • Repealing the temporary period for daylight saving time, making it the permanent standard.
  • Allowing states that previously opted out of DST to maintain their existing time zones.
  • Providing consistency for businesses, schools, and families by eliminating the biannual clock change.
