The Sisters of Blue Mountain Karen Katchur

Both of Karen Katchur’s novels – her debut, The Secrets of Lake Road, and her forthcoming, The Sisters of Blue Mountain (Published by St. Martin’s Press; On-sale April 4, 2017) – were inspired by tragedies she witnessed as a young woman vacationing in the Poconos: the drowning of a young boy and the death of a man by car accident on a dark mountain road. Katchur says they were two events she never could shake, and the setting – the juxtaposition of the lake and the mountains and their inherent dangers – irresistible. She knew she would one day build her fiction around them.

In The Sisters of Blue Mountain, we meet two sisters: Linnet, whose bed and breakfast, the Snow Goose, is threatened after hundreds of snow geese turn up dead in a nearby dam, and her estranged sister, Myrna. Their father, a retired ornithology professor suffering from dementia, is tasked with investigating the incident. When his failing memory becomes apparent, a younger professor is called upon to aid in the investigation. But then that professor turns up dead on the B&B’s property, and the sisters’ father is named the prime suspect.

Meanwhile, Jake, a journalist, arrives in town on the pretense of covering the recent events, but his true motivations are personal. Twenty years ago, his father was killed in a car accident on the mountain road not far from the B&B. His investigation into the young professor’s death and the circumstances surrounding his own father’s death forces the sisters to finally face the secrets and lies that have long plagued them and their family.
