ZANELLI CELEBRATES PRIDE IN ALLENTOWN

“If we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu.”

Aug. 20, Allentown, Pa. – Amy Zanelli, Democratic candidate for Lehigh County Commissioner District 3, couldn’t stop smiling.  Surrounded by hundreds of people enjoying life, family, friends, food and the LGBT community, Zanelli celebrated Pride in the Park in Allentown on a beautiful Sunday.

“I’m Amy. Have a wonderful Pride,” Zanelli said. Dressed in rainbow tulle, Zanelli welcomed visitors to Allentown’s traditional August festival at Cedar Beach Park with rainbow bracelets and stickers. If elected in November Zanelli would be the first openly gay commissioner on the Lehigh County Board of Commissioners.

After a week of national tension and chaos, the Pride celebration was a refreshing and exhilarating day of music, fun, iced drinks and fair food.  The overwhelming mood was unthreatened pride in diversity.

“In the wake of this administration it’s really resonating with the community that it’s our local government that protects us against this fascist, sexist, homophobic administration. If we can shore up our local government, we’ll be able to protect our threatened minority communities through our own city and county levels. We don’t have a truly representative government and if we aren’t given a seat at the table, we are on the menu.”

“Amy is out and she is open about who she is,” said supporter Becky Wamsley. “She’s just like everyone else here, not afraid to be who they are. She’s very family oriented. So, when she is out here she is showing people that you can build a life and you don’t have to be afraid of who you are.”

Zanelli heads into the November general election with strong grassroots support after a decisive victory in a hotly contested Democratic primary race.  With support from several workers unions, Zanelli is an advocate for working families and fair, safe working conditions for individuals of all backgrounds. Key issues in her campaign focus on equal pay, workplace safety and fair treatment of all workers in the Valley.  Lehigh Valley Building Trades Union and Lehigh Valley For All have endorsed Zanelli’s candidacy and IBEW Local 375 has supported Zanelli’s campaign.
