Healthy Tips from Michelle Martucci, RD, LDN

Dietician for Bethlehem Area School District

The ABC Tips – Here are some A’s:

Acai is a purple berry that resembles a blueberry. Acai contains antioxidants known as anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are known to help fight cancer and heart disease. Acai also contains oleic acid, which is the same heart-healthy fat found in olive oil. Acai is generally found in the freezer section or in juice form at your local grocery store. Try blending acai into your smoothie.

Apples, as the saying goes: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Apples contain antioxidants, polyphenols, flavonoids, and vitamin C, which help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, some cancers, diabetes, and asthma. Make sure to eat the skin of the apple, because this is where most of the fiber comes from, as well as it contains 2 to 6 times the amount of antioxidants compared to the flesh. Have a quick snack today by dipping apples in peanut butter.

Asparagus is a good source of vitamin K, high in folate, and contains antioxidants, which helps with strong bones, blood clotting, and reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Asparagus is also low in calories and fat. Try to purchase asparagus in Spring, when it is in season. Purchasing in season ensures fruits and vegetables are at peak freshness and are generally cheaper than purchasing out of season. Try this vegetable as a side dish for dinner by grilling some asparagus stalks and topping with lemon pepper seasoning.

Avocados are a nutrient dense food and contain high amounts of fiber, folate, potassium (twice the amount of a banana), vitamin E, and magnesium. Avocados also contain oleic acid, which is a heart-healthy fat. Oleic acid is known to help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) in the body and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Although avocados have many health benefits, it is also high in calories, so if you are going to consume avocado try to stick with only half of an avocado per day. Try using avocado in place of mayo on a sandwich.
