PPL LIVE UNITED Award honors organizations that significantly improve quality of life throughout the Greater Lehigh Valley.

Allentown, PA, October 8, 2019 – In recognition of PPL’s generous and steadfast partnership for many decades, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley (UWGLV) has renamed its highest annual honor the PPL LIVE UNITED Award.

“If you want to know what it means to LIVE UNITED, look no further than PPL. When you choose to LIVE UNITED, you acknowledge that we’re all in this together and that we can all make a difference when we work together. PPL’s employees and retirees bring this spirit to all they do and are a driving force behind United Way’s impact throughout the Greater Lehigh Valley. With the newly renamed PPL LIVE UNITED Award, we recognize their one-of-a-kind support, amazing commitment and incredible leadership,” remarked David Lewis, President, UWGLV.

The PPL LIVE UNITED Award is presented to an organization whose engagement in the Lehigh Valley community results in a significant contribution toward improving the quality of life for those in need through giving, advocating and volunteering.

Since 2009, PPL, its employees and its retirees have contributed more than $24 million through employee and retiree donations, event fundraisers and support from the PPL Foundation. In 2018, PPL employees contributed 20,000 volunteer hours to the communities they serve.

“Our employee and retiree contributions are an expression of their caring spirit and represent an investment in the future of our neighborhoods. Together, we are making our communities stronger and more vibrant,” said PPL Chairman and Chief Executive Officer William H. Spence, who co-chaired United Way’s record-breaking $15 million 100th anniversary campaign in 2018 with his wife Denise.

PPL’s contributions include donations from individual employees and retirees and a dollar-for-dollar match from the PPL Foundation. Additionally, PPL strongly supports United Way educational initiatives as a Community School partner for Cleveland Elementary School in Allentown School District and has been recognized as a Summer Learning Champion for the company’s Cover to Cover reading program. PPL Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Joanne Raphael currently serves as United Way’s Board Vice Chair.

The PPL LIVE UNITED Award will be presented at United Way’s annual Celebration of Caring in April 2020. Past LIVE UNITED honorees include City Center Allentown (2019), Air Products (2018), Dual Temp Company Inc. (2017), Talen Energy (2016) and PPL (2015).
