Liberty Bell Museum American Revolution Exhibit to Open November 8th

Curator Kurt Zwikl to Speak at Gallery Opening Reception 6:00-7:30pm

Allentown – The Liberty Bell Museum in Allentown will feature “Bringing the War of Independence To Life” in an exhibit of 19th Century illustrations from a collection curated by Allentown resident Kurt Zwikl. At a special opening presentation, Zwikl will be highlighted as guest speaker starting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8th.

“Since the 1970’s, I have been assembling a collection of original 19th century engravings of battles of the American Revolution and wanted to exhibit them,” Zwikl said. He’s been working with the National Park Service and officials at Heritage areas in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to host the traveling exhibition. The Liberty Bell Museum exhibit will be the 4th that Zwikl has curated.

The exhibit includes 47 original engravings of the American Revolution and represent illustrations from 16 artists including John Trumbull, John Warner Barber, Felix O.C. Darley, Alonzo Chappel, Howard Pyle and Frederick C. Yohn.  All are known for their historical work and in particular their renditions of the military leaders, battle scenes and memorable events from the American Revolution.

Zwikl, a former state legislator, past president of the Allentown Economic Development Corporation and former chair of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, was recently elected President of the Allentown School District Foundation Board of Directors.

The Liberty Bell Museum is located in historic Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ, located at 622 W. Hamilton St, Allentown, PA. The church is on the National Register of Historic Places. As the first church in Allentown, the site was used as a refuge during Indian raids, a revolutionary war hospital, a gathering place for the reading of the Declaration of Independence, and more.
