Crayola Experience partners with astronaut John Shoffner to encourage kids to let their imagination soar

EASTON, Pa. (April 16, 2023) – Looking for a stellar activity this weekend for the kids? Monday is the deadline for them to enter the International Space Art and Poetry Contest for an out-of-this-world opportunity to have their artwork presented live from the International Space Station by astronaut John Shoffner.

Shoffner and Crayola Experience—the family destination for creative, interactive play—invite kids ages 5-18 years old from around the world to envision what it would look like if we lived in space and use their colorful curiosity and creativity to create an original drawing, painting or written poetry. Selected representatives will have their artwork featured during the Axiom-2 mission to the International Space Station in May.

Entries for the International Space Art and Poetry Contest are due by midnight UTC on Monday (4/17). Artwork will be scored on thematic accuracy, interpretation, creativity, technical quality, and overall impression. Visit www.spaceartcontest.com for submissions and full contest rules.

The contest, inspired by Shoffner, is hosted in collaboration with Crayola Experience, Limitless Space Institute, MIT Space Exploration Initiative, and Axiom Space, Inc.

Shoffner, who will serve as pilot for Axiom Space’s Ax-2 mission to the ISS this Spring is a life-long space enthusiast. While space was his first passion, he took a more traditional career route. Despite finding success in the fiber optic telecommunications industry, Shoffner’s wild ambition to become an astronaut never escaped him. In fact, he held onto a painting he created when he was 10 years old of an astronaut floating in space. Little did Shoffner know that painting would later accompany him to the ISS and inspire a global art contest.
