Rap, radio and 80’s MTV were alive in the Lehigh Valley Saturday night, August 6th when hip hop group Run-D.M.C. took the Sands Steel Stage at Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA.

Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons and Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels from Hollis, Queens, New York, performed a 13-song set lasting 55 minutes.  They only perform once a year but you would never know it.  They opened the show wearing their trademark black fedoras and had a tougher sound with a lot more edge while performing “It’s Tricky”, “Here We Go” and “It’s Like That”.

The sons of deceased third member Jam Master Jay, Jayson and TJ Mizell were featured on the turntables in a tribute to Jay who was murdered outside his recording studio in 2002.  The show closed with their huge hits “My Adidas” and “Walk This Way”.

Run-D.M.C. is the first group in the rap genre to have a gold album and be nominated for a Grammy Award and they are one of the most influential acts in the history of hip hop culture.  Rapper Eminem inducted them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 and they were recently awarded the first rap Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
