WELLS FARGO FOUNDATION DESIGNATES $15,000 FOR LCTI STEAM SUMMER CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ASD MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

The Allentown School District Foundation (ASDF) is excited to have secured funding from the Wells Fargo Foundation to grant scholarships to ASD middle school students so that they have the opportunity to participate in one-week STEAM camps at Lehigh Career & Technical Institute (LCTI) this summer.

The Wells Fargo $15,000 contribution enables the ASD Foundation to facilitate student involvement in LCTI’s summer camp programs that provide workforce development career opportunities. Camp LCTI supports the Foundation’s strategic commitment to offering college and career scholarships with a middle school focus. Twelve to 14 students will be identified by guidance counselors in each of Allentown’s four middle schools to participate for one-week in LCTI’s summer camp – Camp LCTI – at no cost to them or their families.

“Wells Fargo’s commitment to the community includes helping students to learn about financial education and identifying career ambitions,” said Michael Pany, Community Relations Consultant at Wells Fargo. “By working with the ASD Foundation, we are able to coordinate this effort with a focus on Allentown’s middle school students.”

“The middle school student is at a point in his or her life when exploration of career ideas should take place,” says Susan L. Williams, Executive Director of the Allentown School District Foundation. “This is a strategic priority for the Foundation, to offer opportunities to our students to find their career and college pathways that lead to bright futures.

“We are very excited to learn that the Allentown School District Foundation received funding from Wells Fargo in the amount of $15,000 for their middle school students to attend Camp LCTI this summer,” said Dr. Tim Rushton, LCTI’s executive director. “Students at this juncture of their lives are considering what types of careers interest them and their exposure to our STEAM-focused programming provides a vital component of their decision making process.  This demonstrates the Allentown School District’s dedication to providing their students with educational and experiential opportunities to best assist them in making successful career decisions.”

Career & Technical Education Supervisor Stephen Monastra agreed, adding, “Camp LCTI offers new and exciting experiences each year for the youth of Lehigh County to expand their world, create new interests and develop career aspirations.”

Camp participants take four classes that challenge them with career-related topics and experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). They engage with tools available in LCTI’s high-tech facilities in Schnecksville and learn about the value of career and technical education in June.

Camp LCTI involves several creative program opportunities, with titles that reflect integrated study. Last year’s camp class titles included COMPUFUN, CUISINARTISTS, DIGITAL PADAWAN, DIGITAL KNIGHT, DIGITAL MASTER, FORENSIC FUN, FUNTOGRAPHY, GEOCACHE ME IF YOU CAN, HAMMERTIME, HEALTH EXPLORERS, INVENTIONEERING, IT’S ELECTRIC!, JUST DESSERTS, KEEPING IT COOL, MINI MASONS, MURAL MAGIC, NETWONDERS, SCIENCE FITNESS, SMART ART, SUPER CIRCUITS, and VIRTUAL ADVENTURES.
