BETHLEHEM, PA (3/22/2019) – Valley Youth House (VYH) is pleased to announce that our Lehigh Valley Shelter received the first ever Community Spotlight Award, presented by the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine and Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN).

The award was presented at the USF SELECT (Scholarly Excellence. Leadership Experiences. Collaborative Training.) Awards Gala held on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks.  The evening was a celebration to honor the class of 2019, the faculty members who have mentored them, and the community that has supported them.

Statement from USF Morsani College of Medicine and Lehigh Valley Health Network:

“It is our honor to present this year’s Community Spotlight Award. This award recognizes the community organization that has empowered students to act as agents of change in the greater community at large. This year’s recipient was chosen by the class of 2019 for several reasons. For more than 40 years, this organization has provided not only a home to homeless and unsheltered youth, but also holistic programs including mentoring, counseling, substance abuse, LGBTQ+ services and much more.

The students and faculty at LVHN have had the unique opportunity to bring health care access to the residents of this shelter through bimonthly clinics. This experience has allowed students to reconnect with the heart of medicine by building relationships with those most vulnerable, and we can say without a doubt we have all been changed for the better. We could not be happier to present this year’s Community Spotlight Award to Valley Youth House.”

“We greatly value the partnership we have with LVHN and USF SELECT medical students.  Together we are creating better futures and meeting the medical needs of the young people served at our shelter.” said Christina Schoemaker, Senior Vice President of Development & Marketing at Valley Youth House.
